CHECKLIST FOR ESSAYS AND PARAGRAPHS

This process must be completed for all drafts for the rest of the semester. This is a two-part process

CREATE DRAFT #1

  • Pre-writing (freewriting, lists, outlines, questions, clusters)
  • Paragraph plan/Essay plan
  • Using all of this information write a draft.  Create a title and add Draft #1.
  • Attach the steps in reverse order -- draft #1 goes on top, (pre-writing) on the bottom.

CREATE DRAFT #2

NOTE FOR THIS PROCESS YOU WILL BE ANNOTATING YOUR DRAFT #1 AS NOTED IN CHAPTER 8.

  • Revise for unity, coherence and detail.
  • Edit for grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Other annotations include
    1. Ask questions (p.27).  Have you fully, precisely and concretely accounted for all the answers to these questions?
    2. Select an order (time, space, order of importance). Verify that your work is in correct order.  Is this reflected in your work?
    3. Add at least three transitions. This will map to your order and specific type of essay.
    4. Add all necessary details.
    5. Add a new interesting title.
    6. Include a paragraph or essay checklist for your specific type of essay – narrative, descriptive, illustrative, etc.  Make sure that you have fully reviewed it.
    7. Complete the postwrite form.
    8. Using all of this information write a revise and edited draft.  Use the new title and add Draft #2.
    9. Attach the steps in reverse order -- (Draft #2) goes on top, (the revised and edited Draft #1) on the bottom.

FINALLY THE LAST STEP

  • Combine step I & II together -- step 2 (Draft #2) goes on top.
  • Secure all papers with a staple, paper clip, or binder clip.
