SEXUALITY
  • Homosexuality as a 19th century construct
  • After the Enlightenment rise of empiricism
  • Beginning to study people, classify, type
    • At the beginning of the century 80 sexual types are noted.
    • At the end of the century two, homosexual and heterosexual
    • Homosexuality becomes criminalized (Gross Indecency Acts)

  • You may wish to review the Sedgwick questions?
  • How do characters perform their sexuality
  • Look at 
    • gestures
    • actions
    • attire
    • hair
    • make-up
  • How are people portrayed?
    • stereotypes
    • continuums across a spectrum
      • butch 
      • femme (nancy, pansy, sissy)
  • What are their roles in the film?
    • buddy movies
  • How do they interact with opposite sex?
  • How do they interact with same sex?
  • Look for sub-text, coding
