The following course description is for both regular and telecourse offerings. 

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE SYLLABUS.  YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE COURSE REQUIREMENTS

ON THE SYLLABUS.  

Note:  Dates for the Orientation and the Three Exams are on the Syllabus.

Note:  Make up exams are only  granted for medical and/or emergency situations and will be given on Monday evenings usually the week following the regularly scheduled exam.

Children are not allowed to attend the Orientation, Class or Exams.

 The Telecourse  and Campus course Child Growth and Development Skills is an entry level course intended for students seeking

 a career in the child development field.  Please Note:  Students who enroll in this course are expected to access the Web. 

 All materials  are on my Web Page. 

   It is the responsibility of students to download all of the forms. If you experience difficulty accessing this

  information contact the CCRI Help Desk at 825-1112 and/or the Telecourse Office at 333-7156.

   Please do not contact the Instructor for instructions regarding questions concerning accessing the Web Page. 

  Also, it is easier to correspond by e-mail.  Any questions concerning the content of the course, please e-mail me.

  There are a few guidelines that need to be shared with you to make sure this course is right for you

  1.  There is an Orientation for the telecourse (campus course does not have a formal orientation

  course (date and time will be posted).

  2.  There are three in-class exams.  This means that you must be able to take these exams

  on the prescribed dates.   If granted, Make-up Exams are only given for a medical or emergency situation. 

 

 If you know that your schedule does not permit that you take

 the exams at the prescribed time stated in the syllabus, then

 do not take this course.

 

  3.  You must complete three observations at a licensed child development facility or school. 

  That means that you must be able to free up time to complete these observations. Each observation 

  takes between 1.5 to 2 hours.  

  Please note that no exceptions will be made regarding exam times and child observations. 

  Observations are expected to be handed in on the expected date in the syllabus. 

  Late Observations may not be accepted.  If accepted, points will be taken off for Late observations. 

 

  4.  Class attendance (Non Telecourse students)  After three missed classes your final grade will

  be dropped one letter grade.

 

  5.  Telecourse Tapes.  For the Telecourse each week you will watch a programs via your home television

  (The channel and times will be sent to you from the Telecourse Office at CCRI.  You are responsible

  for watching these programs.  The programs can also be viewed at each of the four campuses. 

  These programs should be on reserved.  Please contact the telecourse office at CCRI as to the location

  of these programs.

   HMNS 2100 Child Growth and Development Skills Fall 2009

  Course Objectives:

   1. To create a greater awareness of the physical, cognitive/language, and social/emotional 

   development of young children

   2. To provide theoretical and practical knowledge to improve students' skills for working with children.

   3. To encourage students to explore various methods for guiding the growth and development 

   of children.

 

 What Text and Study Guide Do I Purchase?

  Required:

   1. Early Childhood Development: A Multicultural Perspective, J Trawick-Smitth, fifth edition

   The text can be purchased  at the Flanagan (333-7011), Liston (455-6101) and Warwick (825-2134) campus bookstores

   2.  Cancellations:  All Cancellations due to Weather are announced via  CCRI.   Due not call the Instructor!  CCRI will officially

   cancel classes.  

   3.  Contacting the Instructor. Questions concerning the course can best be answered by attending class weekly 

    and/or  by e-mail. I have found that it is more difficult to reach students by phone. 

   My phone # is 455-6128.  If you leave a message, please speak clearly and slowly.  E-mails and return phone calls will be

   made during my office hours.  My office hours will be given to you at the first class and/or Orientation. 

   Students who have a phone number which requires that *82 or a similar requirement  is dialed cannot be reached

   via CCRI office  phones.  Therefore, your calls cannot re returned.

 

  Instructor Contacting The Class

   At times the whole class will be contacted to provide information (e.g., a question on an

   exam, changes in syllabus, etc.).  This information will be sent via CCRI Pipeline e-mail.  Students are responsible to 

   check their CCRI Pipeline e-mail for this information.

 

  Please Note:

   1.  Cell Phone/Portable Communication Device Policy:  All Cell Phones, Pagers, Blackberries etc. are to be

  turned off or put on vibrate mode and are to be kept either under your desk or in a place that does not

  provide a distraction to you and your classmates.  Such devices are to be used only for emergencies.  S

  tudents who do not respect this policy may be asked to leave the classroom.

 

  2.  Only students officially enrolled in the class are permitted to attend class.  Children are not

 allowed to attend class. 

 

Grading

Telecourse

  Grades are based upon a 400-point system. The following is a breakdown of the point system.

Point Breakdown:

   1.  Exam One Infants

   Short Essay   100 points 

   Child Development Observation Ages 3-14 months 25 points

   2.  Exam Two Toddlers and Preschoolers

   Short Essay 100 points

   Child Development Observation Ages 2-5  50 points

   There is an observation for toddlers and one for preschoolers

   3.  Exam Three Infants through Young Grade-schoolers

    Short Essay 100 points

   Child Development Observation Ages 5-8 25 points

   360 to 400  points        A

   320  to 359 points         B

   280  to  319 points        C

   240  to 279 points         D

   239 and below              F

  Incomplete Grade:  Incomplete grade is determined by the Instructor after a meeting with the student.  Students

  who request an Incomplete must submit a written proposal outlining the reason for the request.  Incomplete

  grades are only granted to those students who have successfully (C or better) completed 2/3 of the course

  (Completed the first two exams and the first two child observations)

  Incomplete grades must be made up within one semester of the date granted.

  Withdrawal  

  Please contact the Office of Admissions and Records for more information regarding the 

  specific refund and/or withdrawal dates for courses offered this semester. Students who fail

  to formally withdraw from the course via the Office of Admissions and Records and fail to

  complete the responsibilities of the course are eligible to receive a withdrawal grade 

  (WP if passing at time of withdrawal or WF if failing at time of withdrawal).

   videos, the study guide questions and the child observations.

   Child Observation Ages 3-14 months (this will also serve as a study guide).

   Exam will cover all of the material up and including Week Five.  Infant

   Observation to be handed in.

 

  Part Two:  Older Toddlers and Preschoolers (ages 2-5)

  the study guide for the second exam)

  Complete Observation and hand in at the exam

  Child Development Observation Ages 5-8
