Brief update on Vaults

After I left you all on Wednesday, I tried to find more information on this organelle called the Vault.  Dr Leonard H. Rome apparently is responsible for the discovery of these structures in 1986.  Quoting from a web page, "Vaults are novel RNPs [Ribonucleoprotein Particles] found in most (probably all) eukaryotic cells.  The particles are quite large, measuring 65 X 35 nm.  Vaults contain a small RNA with a structural conservation that suggests that it [the RNA] is an essential functional component ... Vaults have been shown to be increased in tumors and cells which display multidrug resistance (MDR)."  I have included here a link to a  web page that you might enjoy, if you want more information.
