Psych High School Notes from 2003-2004
Chapter 5 (Updated Monday 11/24)
Recent movies from my high school Psychology course
Billy Elliot (2000) Very nice movie with gender roles examined from a Blue-collar perspective in gritty England during Maggie Thatcher's reign that explains the political and social policies of the eighties as well the stress of living in an economically disadvantaged household. Oh yes, and your son who you wanted to follow in your footsteps as the village boxing champ wants to be a ballet dancer instead.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Classic with a young Jack Nicholson)
Stand By Me (Coming of Age for teens, very good)
The Secret of Roan Inish (Irish mysticism or magic as seen through he eyes of a child). From Roger Ebert; "The secret of John Sayles' "The Secret of Roan Inish" is that it tells of this young girl with perfect seriousness. This is not a children's movie, not a fantasy, not cute, not fanciful. It is the exhilarating account of the way Fiona rediscovers her family's history and reclaims their island."
A Beautiful Mind (Works nicely for schizophrenia.)
Girl, Interrupted Very good movie, especially in that it explores the female side of mental illness. Angelina Jolie is terrific, especially in scenes where she bares her soul making her particularly vulnerable. I like to show this one after One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for the two different takes.
