TEXT: Career Development Study Guide

OBJECTIVES:

1. To help students to formulate their career goals by examining their values, abilities, skills, interests, and personality.

2. To provide information about work-oriented programs, occupational outlook, and the process of applying for a job.

OUTLINE:

1. Overview - career development and the world of work; historical influences; work laws and programs; vocational development theory.

2. Basic vocational development theories; using dreams to develop strategies for career planning.

3. Analyzing interests, leisure activities, and life style.

4. Value clarification.

5. Assessing abilities and skills - functional, adaptive, work skills.

6. Examining personality and Personal Preferences in relation to a career.

7. Prioritizing integrating all elements into a specific career plan of action.

8. Applying for a Job - resumes and applications.

9. Interviewing techniques.

10. Where from here- putting plan into action.

 

 

EVALUATION:

1. Prepare a formal resume. Typewritten, standard format, directed toward a potential career. (20% of grade)

2. A Career Assessment Paper, including: (50% of grade)

a. Past Activities (work experiences, etc.)

b. Test Results (completed handouts with personal analysis)

c. Short and Long Range Goals (including an interview with someone in your possible career field.)

3. Participation and attendance. (15% of grade)

4. Homework assignments.

5. Quiz. (15% of grade)
