I. Course Objectives

This one credit, fifteen week seminar will aid students in reaching their academic potential and help them enjoy a successful educational experience at CCRI. Emphasis will be developing the Umbrella Competencies and:

A. Academic resources: accessing and using library resources; understanding College policies and procedures.

B. Study/Learning Skills; managing and using study time effectively; taking effective notes; preparing for and taking tests; assessing learning style.

C. Interpersonal Effectiveness: improving basic communication skills; experiencing group process and team building.

II. Teaching Approach

The objectives of the course will be achieved by lectures, group discussions, assignments, and information exchange using the laptop computer.

III. Attendance

Attendance for the course is mandatory. If you are unable to attend class, call the Verizon Next Step Center.

IV. Course Evaluation

Grades will be determined using the following criteria:

1. Quizzes (20%).

2. Assignments to be completed and turned in (15%).

3. Class participation (15%).

4. A group project (50%).
