GETTING STARTED with SAM 2003
SAM 2003 is
a simulated software product that will train and assess your knowledge of
Windows, using the Internet, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. These
directions will help you get started using SAM.
Computer Requirements.
1. IBM PC Compatible. MAC won't work.
2. Pentium III 500 MHz or higher.
3. 256 MB RAM
4. SVGA graphics
5. Hard Disk Space: 2.5 GB
6. One of the following Operating Systems must be installed:
· Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4
· Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2
· Windows XP Professional Edition with Service Pack 2
· Windows VISTA (You will need special CDs for this. Contact your instructor for information on getting these CDs.)
7. Live Internet connection

Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. **** If you are
using Internet Explorer 7, you may have to "tweak" it.

9. Macromedia Flash Player 7 or higher
To use SAM at home: Load the CDs onto
your machine. (SAM is already
installed on all the computers in the CCRI labs, so you do not need the CDs to
use SAM at school.)
1. Close all open programs, applications, and windows on your computer.
2. Put in CD 1, the installation should start automatically.
3. If it doesn't start automatically, Click Start, choose Run, type D:\setup.exe (where D is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive), and click OK.
4. On the License Agreement screen, accept the terms and click Next.
5. Take the defaults on the screens that follow.
6. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
YOU SHOULD HAVE THE SAM 2003 ICON on your desktop.
Create your SAM account. (You can do this part even if you didn't get SAM
installed on your computer. However, in order to take SAM training and quizzes,
you must work on a computer that the CDs have been loaded onto.)
1. Double click the SAM icon on the desktop. (Make sure you are connected to the Internet.)
· Alternatively, open your browser and type this: http://sam2003.course.com
· *** You must be accessing the Internet through Internet Explorer 5 or higher. SAM is not supported using FireFox. If you access the Internet through AOL or another provider, be sure to minimize that window and go to SAM through Internet Explorer. See the note in red above if you are using Internet Explorer 7.
2. Click on NEW USER option.
3. Input the Institution Key: S3527635.
4. Click
OK. Confirm it says
5. Enter your key code found on the ORANGE TAG on the INSIDE JACKET of your CD set.
· *** The code can only be used once. You cannot use someone else's code.
· Type carefully.
· An O (letter) can easily be confused with a 0 (number).
· An I (letter) can easily be confused with a 1 (number). Most codes start with LI3 (that's an I not a #1).
6. Click OK.
7. Fill in the User Profile.
· First name
· Last name
· Username: Enter your Pipeline email address here (including the @ccri.edu part)
o Example: jqstudent@ccri.edu
o You will not be able to change the username later, so check it over carefully before saving.
· Password: Enter your Pipeline password here
o It is probably your birthday (using 6 digits)
o Example: 042186
· Email: Enter your Pipeline email address again
8. Click Save
9. Agree to the SAM 2003 TERMS AND CONDITIONS.
10. You can click on the "click here" link to access the complete Student Guide (instructions for using SAM 2003) or click OK to skip. You can also access the Student Guide from the "documentation" link within SAM at any time.
11. You will NOT need to ever create your account again. Now that your account is created, you will not need the Institution Code or your Key Code again. See below for Login instructions.
Join My Section.
1. Click on the SECTIONS option on the left side of the window.
2. Click on JOIN SECTION option on the right hand side of the window.

Look for your section: JOHNSON COMI1100 XXX
· XXX is your class time: 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 6:00, or ONLINE
4. Click on your section to highlight.
5. Click on the black arrow ( > ) in the middle of the 2 selection areas to join the section. This will move the section into the right-hand box.
6. Click Save to save your section information.
Finding and Downloading the Assignments
1. Click on the Assignments link on the left hand side of the window.
2. See the middle of the window to review available assignments. They will include trainings, quizzes, and exams.
3. Available assignments will be links: just click on the underlined items to launch.
Logout when you are done
1. Click the LOGOUT option on the left side of the window. This will end your SAM session.
Login to SAM whenever you want to work on assignments.
1. Double-click the SAM icon on the desktop, or point your browser to http://sam2003.course.com
2. You will NOT need to re-create a SAM account. You only do that once. On the Login screen, enter your Username and Password
3. Click Login
4. You will NOT need to re-enter the institution code or the orange key code from your CD case.
