Creating a Multiple Choice Quiz for WebCT and Importing into Respondus, Version 2.0 ( Available in the CIT Room on the Flanagan, Knight, and Providence campuses)

While a quiz can be created in WebCT and in Respondus, it can also be created using a word processing program and imported into Respondus and from there imported into WebCT.

Step 1

Create Your Quiz
Use a word processing program, such as Microsoft Word, to create your quiz. In order for the questions to upload properly, the numbers must be manually created. In Microsoft Word, deselect auto-format. Click Tools, AutoCorrect Options, AutoFormat as you Type. Under Apply as you type, click off the box next to Automatic Numbered Lists.

Additionally, follow these brief tips to format your questions and answers for multiple choice and true/false questions so that Respondus can recognize them.

TIPS:
Each question must begin with a question number, followed by either a period or a parenthesis.
Example: 1.
Example: 1).

The question wording must follow the question number. (Note: at least one space should be between the question number and the question wording.)
Example: 1) Who determined the exact speed of light?
Example: 1. Who determined the exact speed of light?

Each answer choice must begin with a letter (A-Z, lowercase or uppercase) followed by a period or a parenthesis.
Example:
1) Who determined the exact speed of light?
a. Albert Einstein
b. Albert Michelson
c. Thomas Edison
d. Guglielmo Marconi

Indicate correct answers by placing an asterisk (*) directly in front of the answer  (do not put a space between the asterisk and the answer category).
Example:
1) Who determined the exact speed of light?
a. Albert Einstein
*b. Albert Michelson
c. Thomas Edison
d. Guglielmo Marconi

2. The speed of light is exactly 299,792,458 m/s.
*a. True
b. False

You can also add the answers to the questions at the end of the document (you cannot have any text after the list of answers or the answers will be ignored). Add the text Answers: followed by a list of questions numbers and answers.
Example:

Answers:
1. a
2. d

Step 2

Save Your Quiz
When you are finished, save your quiz in either plain text (.txt) or rich text format (.rtf). If you are using underlining or bold features, then save in rich text format.
Note: If you have a set of quizzes or questions from a publisher that are done in Word,
merely open the test bank in Word and do a "Save As" rich text format. Then go to Step 3, "Import" into Respondus.

(a) If you see no warnings or notes in that box, go to #4and click on Finish and proceed to Step 10.

(b) If you see a warning or note in the box under the "Preview results" box, that indicates a potential problem. For example, in the Image 7 screenshot, Respondus notes that no answer was given for question 48. When no answer is given, by default, Respondus automatically gives "a" as the correct answer. If this is not the correct answer, you can then edit the question by clicking on the blue hyperlinked area next to the question number. The Property Box will then open.
