Topic Idea Development Bubbles

Purpose:
Assist students in visually and communally selecting and narrowing a speech topic adapted to their audience.
 

Time: 30 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Give students a large piece of paper. Instruct them to put their broad general subject are in a circle in the middle of the paper.
  2. Draw bubbles all around topic with ideas related to topic
  3. Pass paper to next person who must add three more balloons
  4. Balloons can content questions, comments, concerns, cautions, content
  5. Continue to pass pages around room until everyone has looked at all pages
  6. Return to the owner and debrief.
    1. What new ideas do you see?
    2. What questions will you need to address?
    3. What concerns were expressed?
    4. What will you need to be cautious about?
    5. What will your purpose be?

This exercise can be conducted more quickly if you limit the number of respondents, but then there is less feedback and ideas for the speaker to choose from.

Exercise can also lead to an outline by identifying key points, supporting material, introductory material, and identify organizational strategies.
