Course Description:

The course begins by examining the disease process in general, from the etiology of disease at the cellular

level to the physiologic changes that occur as the disease moves from incipient stage to full expression.

The second half of the course examines the pathogenesis of specific diseases system by system.

Course Objectives:

*  use anatomic and physiologic terminology while acquiring new terminology for pathophysiology

*  discuss the "stress response"

*  discuss pathophysiologic changes that can occur as a result of cell injury

*  distinguish between genetic disorders and congenital disorders using examples

*  describe events of inflammation and analyze its role in both homeostasis and disease

*  discuss neoplasia:  etiology, pathogenesis, and a few of the clinical manifestations

*  explain known etiology, pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of some major diseases by system

*  apply anatomical and physiologic concepts to identify selected disease conditions

*  solve case studies using lecture, text, and appropriate online sources

*  create concept organizers and visualizations of course content

*  demonstrate critical thinking by application to clinical situations, disease processes and current news

Course Policies:

Attendance at all lectures is mandatory.

You are responsible for the material presented in lecture, regardless of absence.
