LABORATORY #1: TERMINOLOGY AND SAFETY
Due at beginning of your second laboratory, terminology quiz and lab safety exercise.
Terminology quiz: At the beginning of your second anatomy lab, you will have a quiz on the
terminology discussed in lab #1, (see lab manual for lab #1)
The library has a video, made by Dr Royal and Wendy Pelto, demonstrating most of the terminology.
Safety exercise (three parts): 1) Learn Lab Safety Rules
2) Learn about and use an MSDS,
3) Online safety quiz (to qualify for future anatomy labs)
1) Click on to Laboratory Safety Policies (on the CCRI web site). Read and learn.
2) Research the safety of the chemical substance, 70% denatured ethanol, a chemical we sometimes use in the lab.
How to research the safety of your chemical:
- Begin by clicking on to MSDS . This web site explains how to find information about a chemical using
a Material Safety Data Sheet. Read this information. (You may want to print out a copy)
- Click on to MSDS Provider in order to find the MSDS for your particular chemical substance.
You will be asked for the manufacturer (JTBaker). Then you will be shown chemicals made by that
company. See if your chemical is listed.
- If the chemical is not listed, click on to http://www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/D0210.htm
for the MSDS. You may want to print out a copy of the MSDS)
3) safety quiz : When you have studied the above information, you are ready to go to Web CT for an
online safety quiz. You must earn 100% on this quiz to continue in future anatomy laboratories. The quiz can
be taken as many times as necessary. Web CT will list your highest score. You must take the quiz before your
second laboratory. If you have not registered for Web CT, you can follow the online student instructions to
register. Then you can Self-Register for Biol 1010 Human Anatomy (Montgomery) to take the Safety Quiz.
