Using Technology In Class

Throughout the semester you will be asked to use technology to access information and/or communicate with your instructor and classmates, via the world wide web.

The first step to getting started is connecting to CCRI’s servers. To do this:

Use a computer equipped (connected to the Web) with a standard Web browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

Type in the URL for the server

  • Pipeline – http://pipeline.ccri.edu  (You can also go to the CCRI homepage at http://www.ccri.edu/  and click on "pipeline")
  • WebCT – http://webct.ccri.edu  (You can also go to the CCRI homepage at http://www.ccri.edu/  and click on "Directory", then WebCT)
  • On-Line Data bases – http://www.ccri.edu/lerc
  • Pipeline

    6. To check class-related email, click on the "email" tab. You may also choose to redirect all of your email to another address. Directions can be found in Pipeline
    7. Check the Pipeline documentation for further assistance.

    WebCT

    Online Databases

In completing class assignments, you will be asked to access CCRI’s online databases. To do this, follow these steps:

From a computer at CCRI (in the lab):

    1. Log on to the CCRI website at http://www.ccri.edu
    2. Click on "Library"
    3. Under "Library Services", click on "periodical databases"
    4. The most useful databases for business topics are generally Academic Search Premier and Lexis-Nexis. Click on that.
    5. Next, enter your topic, key words or company name. Also, it is generally better to search the previous 2 years. Scroll down to that choice. Now press "search"
    6. Citations for various articles should appear and you may select those of interest to view full text.
    7. You may also print the text if available and desired.

    From Home

You may also have access to these databases from home. They are provided through services that CCRI pays a fee for, so you will need a password when not on campus. To get a password, follow these steps:

Get a student ID from Enrollment Services (Dean of Student’s Office). You will need a picture ID and your SS# to do this.

If you have already used the library (i.e., checked out books, videos and/or materials) your password is the barcode on your ID card. If you have not used the library before, take your picture ID to the library and ask the librarian to activate your barcode number.  See How do I access databases from off-campus for further assistance.
