IT 110 - Technology & Society

Offered at Roger Williams University

Welcome to Technology & Society

This course will be conducted completely on-line using Blackboard through the Roger Williams University Blackboard - Academic Suite This does not mean that it is self-paced.  We will move through the course as a whole class with due dates for assignments.  You will have access to the course beginning one week before classes start. The required text Contemporary Technology:  Innovations, Issues and Perspectives is available through the publisher (1-800-323-0440), Amazon.com and the RWU Bookstore.

This format is not for everyone. It will require you to discipline yourself to work with the materials on a daily basis.  Do you have what it takes?  It is strongly recommended that you visit the Website on a daily basis to check your mail and messages on the Discussion Forum. (The Message Board will be our class discussion vehicle.)  This is not a self-paced course.  You will be required to participate in weekly activities (assignments and class discussions).

I have taught this course for several years (over 20 in fact!), and have been teaching courses on-line for more than 7 years.    In addition, I have taken an “on-line” course (as a student), attended seminars, and talked with students and faculty alike.  I have been using web-based materials in both a Blackboard, WebCT and traditional website format to support my “traditional” classes.  Feedback from previous students has been incorporated and I encourage you to provide feedback along the way.

I have tried to organize the Website so that you can find what you need when you need it. However, if at any time you are confused, anxious or need assistance, please feel free to call me (825-2321), e-mail me or contact the RWU Help Desk at 401-254-3285

The Syllabus is provided for your convenience.  If there were one thing I would like to stress in this introduction, is that I am a very approachable, flexible and open-minded person (at least I’d like to think so).

My philosophy of teaching and learning has evolved over many years of being both a learner and a facilitator.  I have spent approximately 15 years sitting in a classroom as a student (although it was some years ago). I, probably like most of you, returned to college as an “adult learner”, (age 27).  It took several years (approximately 25) and a variety of career moves to achieve my goal: to teach. (How old am I?).  Perseverance, dedication and commitment to a goal does pay off.  I have the best job in America!  I love what I do!

I will to the extent possible in this “on-line” world, model what you will be learning in your readings and assignments.  You will discover that effectively managing a business requires leadership, communication and good problem solving skills.

If you have any questions, concerns or issues, please feel free to email me at: jwarren@rwu.edu or call me at: 825-2321.  I want this experience to be meaningful, stimulating, and FUN for you!
