Publishing your site to a server
Last Updated: 01/25/2010 06:28:46 PM
This tutorial leads you through the steps for publishing from a disk drive to your site within my faculty web. We will refer to your class site, the site which contains all of your subsites, folders and files, as your root site.
Please note: In the screen shots below, the drive letter "H:" is interchangeable with whatever drive letter your machine has assigned to your flash drive and the site (folder) "jkirby" on the flash drive pictured below is interchangeable with your root folder on your flash drive. Your root folder should be named with your CCRI user name.
Also note that the site (folder) called "jkirby" in the screen shots of the server site below represents YOUR root site on my faculty web. Instead of "jkirby", your site's name is the same as your CCRI username. For example, were I a student in this class, MY root site on the server for this course would be: http://faculty.ccri.edu/jkirby/09fall/jkirby/
| Step 1 | From your thumb drive site's window,
select "File>Publish Site..."![]() |
|---|---|
| Step 2 | 2a.) When the
"Remote Web Site Properties" box appears, make sure the
"FrontPage
Server Extensions" radio button is selected, then type the URL of your
web site on the server:
http://faculty.ccri.edu/jkirby/09fall/(yourusername),
then click on the "Publishing" tab.
![]() 2b.) In the "Publishing" tab view, select the "Include subsites" checkbox, then click on the "OK" button. ![]() |
| Step 4 | When the login box appears: In the "User name:" field, type: campus\jkirby2 NOTE: be sure to use the back slash character "\" In the "Password:" field, (where you see the dots below), type: jkirby2
If you are working on your own machine, select the
"Remember my password"
check-box --this will not actually remember your password but, it
should remember the text in the user name field. Do not
select this check-box if you are working on a machine other than
your own.
Then select the "OK" button. ![]() |
| Step 5 | You should then see something like
the screen shot below, if you have already published at least
once. Note that the "Local Web Site" (in the left-hand window) will display the path to your site on the thumb drive (or any other drive) and the "Remote Web site" (in the right-hand window) will display your site's URL on the server. In this case, the URL of my site on the server is: Also note that blue arrows will appear next to the files (not folders) which do not exist on the remote (server) site (or have been modified. (If you have no files located directly in the root folder, you may need to open a folder to see this.) Also Note: after the initial publishing, a blue question mark (?)MAY appear next to any given file, instead of a blue arrow. A question mark means EW has recognized that the file on the remote site either did not originate from your thumb drive or was modified ON the remote site, independent of the same file on the local site...in other words, the program recognizes that it is not a direct update of the thumb drive file. In these cases, be particularly careful that you really do want to publish, thus overwrite, the remote file. If you discover that the remote file actually IS the most recent version, simply right-click on the local file and choose, "do not publish" for that file before you re-publish the site. After which, you may decide to update the local file from the remote be reversing the direction of publishing for that one file. Please be sure to mark any files which do not need to be published to the server, "don't publish" by right-clicking on them and selecting, "Don't publish". Files such as the student data files, .psd or .exe files should not be published to the server. Be sure that the "Local to remote" radio button is selected (this is the default) and then select the "Publish Web Site" button. ![]() |
| Step 6 | NOTE: This step is only
relevant
when REPUBLISHING. SKIP THIS STEP IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME
YOU'VE PUBLISHED TO THIS SUB-SITE. At this point, if you haven't marked any question marked files, "do not publish", a "Conflicts" box may appear telling you about the issue I mentioned in Step 5 above. If you have decided you DO want to overwrite the remote site file(s), select "Overwrite Remote Files". ![]() |
| Step 7 | NOTE:
This step is only needed
when RE-PUBLISHING. SKIP THIS STEP IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME
YOU'VE PUBLISHED TO THIS SITE. Next, you may get a "Publishing Web Site Structure" box. Make sure "Let FrontPage merge the changes" is selected and then select "Continue". TIP: Expression web will give you the same sequence of pop-up warnings for each one of your subsites, as it prepares them for publishing. You can tell which subsite it is referring to by looking at the "Status" area beneath the Local and remote site windows. ![]() |
| Step 8 | As the site is being published, you
will see the progress in the Status window.![]() |
| Step 9 | After you site is published to the
server, your EW window should look
something like the one below. Note that in the Status window the details of the publishing and a link which will allow you to open the remote site in its own EW window. |
