Publishing your site to a server

This tutorial leads you through the steps for publishing from a disk drive to your sub-site within my faculty web. A sub-site is simply a site within a site. We will refer to your sub site as your root site on my faculty web.

Please note that in the screen shots below, the drive letter "F:" is interchangeable with whatever drive letter your machine has assigned to your flash drive and the site (folder) "comi1770" on the flash drive pictured below is interchangeable with any site or folder on your flash drive which you choose to publish.

Also note that the site (folder) called "jkirby" in the screen shots below represents YOUR root site on my faculty web.  Instead of "jkirby", your site's name is the same as your CCRI username. For example, were I a student in this class, MY root site for this course would be: http://faculty.ccri.edu/jkirby/08fall/jkirby/

Step 1 From your thumb drive site's window, select the "Publish Site" button.

Step 2 2a.) When the "Remote Web Site Properties" box appears, make sure the "FrontPage or Sharepoint Services" radio button is selected, then type the URL of your web site on the server: http://faculty.ccri.edu/jkirby/08fall/(your user name) Then click on the "Publishing" tab.

2b.)
In the "Publishing" view, select the "Include Subsites" checkbox, then click on the "OK" button.
  2a.)

2b.)

Step 4 When the login box appears, type:

User name: type "campus\jkirby2NOTE: be sure to use the back slash character "\"

Password: where you see the dots, type "jkirby2"

Then select the "Remember my password" check-box and select the "OK" button.

Step 5 You should then see something like the screen shot below. Note that the "Local Web Site" will be your site on the thumb drive (or any other drive) and the "Remote Web site" will be the sub-site's URL on the server. In this case:  "http://faculty.ccri.edu/jkirby/08fall/jkirby/"

Also note that blue arrows will appear next to the files which do not exist on the remote (server) site (or have been modified)  -at this time, none exist on the remote (server) site. (Open a folder to see this)

Note: after the initial publishing, a blue question mark (?)MAY appear next to any given file, instead of a blue arrow.  A question mark means EW has recognized that the file on the remote site either did not originate from your thumb drive or was modified on the remote site, independent of the same file on the local site...it recognizes that it is not a direct update of the thumb drive file. In these cases, be particularly careful that you really do want to publish, thus overwrite, the remote file.  If you discover that the remote file actually IS the most recent version, simply right-click on the local file and choose, "do not publish" for that file before you re-publish the site. After which, you may decide to update the local file from the remote be reversing the direction of publishing for that one file.

Select the "Publish Web Site" button.

Step 6 NOTE: This step is only needed when REPUBLISHING. SKIP THIS STEP IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU'VE PUBLISHED TO THIS SUB-SITE.

At this point, if you haven't marked any question marked files, "do not publish", a "Conflicts" box may appear telling you about the issue I mentioned in "Step 4" above".  If you have decided you DO want to overwrite, select "Overwrite Remote Files".

Step 7 NOTE: This step is only needed when RE_PUBLISHING. SKIP THIS STEP IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU'VE PUBLISHED TO THIS SUB-SITE.

Next, you may get a "Publishing We Site Structure" box, make sure "Let FrontPage merge the changes" is selected and then select "Continue".

Step 8 As the site is being published, you will see the progress in the status window.

Step 9 After you site is published to the server, your EW window should look something like this:

Note that in the Status window the details of the publishing  and a link which will allow you to open the remote site in its own EW window.
