World Literature from the 16th Century

ENGL-2040

Texts: Norton Anthology of Western Literature, Volume 2.

           Macbeth, Signet Classic Edition.

We will read selected works of major writers from the late Renaissance, Enlightenment, and Romantic eras to the present. In the process, we will explore the culture, heritage, and dynamic intellectual history of the fundamental views of what it means to be human. What changing roles do tradition, emotion, rationality, religion, and inspiration play in finding meaning? How have our views changed? In what ways have they remained the same?

We will read drama, fiction, poetry, and selected essays, examining the language, approach, and thematic focus of each, placing them in their historical moment and asking why we still read them.

There will be frequent quizzes, one paper, a mid-term and a final exam. You are allowed five cuts in this class without penalty. After that, your grade is lowered. Except under extraordinary circumstances, after seven absences, you cannot pass the course. You are allowed two late arrivals. All others after that are counted as an absence. Your class participation, both orally in class and through posting on WebCT, is very important and will be a significant part of your grade.
