Composition I

ENGL-1010

The rules for this class are simple and, if you observe them, you will pass the course.

  • Attendance. Your regular attendance is essential.  You are allowed three (3) absences without penalty.  After that, your grade is lowered. Upon your seventh absence, you cannot pass the course. You are allowed to be late twice. After that, except under extraordinary circumstances, you will be counted as absent.
  • Papers. You must turn in a minimum of about 500 words, or two typed pages, every two weeks.  You are encouraged to write more than this - as much more as you can.  No matter how much you write, though, every two weeks a paper is due. You are welcome to write as many papers as you would like. You are welcome to write on any subject that is of real interest to you, though you may not write fiction or poetry.  Let me repeat: Write about what interests you, not about what you hope or believe will interest me or "English teachers" in general.
  • GradesI will correct errors of spelling, punctuation, and grammar and then write a comment at the end.  Generally speaking, the more people write, the better they get at writing.  Therefore - also generally speaking - the more you write, the higher your grade is likely to be.  You must review your errors very carefully, however, and take special pains not to repeat them, and you are required to use your computer to "spell check" each paper before handing it in. Your thoughtful and effective use of WebCT will also play an important role in your grade.
  • ConferencesYou may be required to attend special group conferences in which we will go over particular problems of grammar and composition, and some of you may be asked to do supplemental work in the writing lab.  Please keep all of your papers.  You are welcome, and encouraged, to see me at any time during my office hours.  I am here on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. My office is 1218 and my phone number is 333-7137. My e-mail address is jglickman@ccri.edu.
  • Other. While there will be no textbook, you may wish to buy a recommended handbook. There will be no mid-term or final exam.  There will be no term paper, though you will be asked to use the Works Cited form properly in at least one paper during the semester.  Your oral participation, or lack of it, will be considered in your grade, but your primary concern in here is writing.
