Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Review

1. What was it like to live in a slave society?  You can use the example of Linda as a slave woman, Mrs. Flint as a free white woman, and Dr. Flint as a slave master.  How did Dr. Flint’s sexual advances towards Linda impact the relationships amongst the three?

2. Why did Linda have great satisfaction in having a sexual relationship with the white man, Mr. Sands, who fathered her two children?

3. What was the relationship like between slaves and free blacks in the south—trustworthy, distrustful, or perhaps both?

4.  Why did Linda stay hidden from Dr. Flint for seven years—remaining in a crawl space above her grandmother’s shed?

5. What was life like for free blacks living in the north?

6.  Do you believe that this was an effective piece of literature?
