Dr. Joseph J. Amante y Zapata holds a B.A. in Church Music from Point Loma Nazarene University, an M.M. in Choral Conducting from New England Conservatory of Music, and a D.M.A. in Choral Music from the University of Southern California. He has studied with John Glenn Paton, Joseph Flummerfelt, Lorna Cooke deVaron, Rodney Eichenberger, Gustav Meier, the late Daniel Pinkham and the late Leonard Bernstein at Seranak, Tanglewood Music Center. Originally from California, Dr. Amante directed several church music programs and community choirs in both San Diego and Los Angeles, one choir appearing on the CBS show 48 Hours. He taught high school and elementary school music in Los Angeles, and served as music director for a popular 100+ member chorus known in Hollywood circles.
Dr. Amante directed a parish choir and several community choirs in Massachusetts—The Westford Chorus, The Towne Singers, a group he founded, and The Merrimack Valley Chorale. Dr. Amante performed the bass solo of Mozart’s Requiem with the Westford Chorus, the baritone solo in Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols for both the Westford Chorus and Fall River Symphony, and bass solo in the Brahms’ Liebeslieder for the Chaminade Club (RI) and CCRI.
