Sight Singing and Ear Training III

Prerequisite    Completion of SSET II

Corequisite     MUSC 2700 Music Theory III

 

Course Description    further study of sight singing and ear training skills, including piano requirements of major and minor scales and chord progressions, to complement Theory III. Particular emphasis on nondiatonic pitches and modulation, singing in parts.

Evaluation      Students will be tested individually on a regular basis on assigned drills and prepared keyboard assignments, sight-reading, and dictation (using MacGamut). There will also be a final exam. Tests may not be made up without an excused absence from the instructor. To be considered for an excused absence, you must notify the instructor before class that you will be unable to take the exam that day. Consideration will be given to overall improvement and effort as demonstrated in attendance and classroom participation.

MacGamut assignments 40%

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to

·        read and sing melodies including chromaticism at sight

·        sight-sing independent parts

·        count rhythms in compound, asymmetrical, changing as well as other meters

·        apply principles of Theory III to analyze and read sight-singing melodies

·        master at least level 2 MacGamut dictation in scales, intervals, chords, rhythm and melody

·        recognize the seventh chords and triads aurally in major and minor keys

·           play one octave major and minor scales (hands separate) plus chord progression  I-IV-V-I  in major and minor keys up to 4 sharps or flats
