Sight Singing and Ear Training I

Prerequisite    Music majors only. Non-majors may enroll with permission of the music

                        department faculty.

Corequisite     MUSC 1700 Music Theory I

Course Description    A course in practical sight singing and ear training via solfeggio, to express and comprehend aurally the concepts studied in Music Theory I.

Required Materials     Fundamentals of Sight Singing & Ear Training, by Arnold Fish & Norman Lloyd

                        MacGamut 2003

                        Music staff paper, pencil with eraser

Evaluation      Students will be tested individually at least four times per semester on assigned drills and sight-reading. There will also be a final exam. Tests may not be made up without an excused absence from the instructor. To be considered for an excused absence, you must notify the instructor before class that you will be unable to take the exam that day. Students will also be graded on their mastery of ear-training skills, using the MacGamut software. Consideration will be given to overall improvement and effort as demonstrated in attendance and classroom participation.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to

·        read and sing simple diatonic melodies at sight

·        count basic rhythms in various meters

·        apply principles of Theory I to analyze and read simple melodies

·       recognize intervals of seconds, thirds, fourths, and fifths

·        Take simple rhythmic dictation
